What is a Kyrgyzstan border permit?

A Kyrgyzstan border permit is an official document issued by the Kyrgyz State Border Service. It authorises foreign travellers to enter restricted zones along the country's borders with China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.

It is not a visa, and it does not allow you to cross into a neighbouring country. You must carry the original paper document together with your passport, because photos and copies are not accepted at the military checkpoints that guard these areas. A permit is mandatory for travellers of every age, children included.

6 to 10 working daysStandard processing, weekends and public holidays not counted.
Original onlyCarry the paper permit with your passport at every checkpoint, and keep copies.
Not a visaIt lets you enter restricted zones, but never authorises a border crossing.

    Questions

    Frequently asked questions

What is a Kyrgyzstan border permit?

It is an official document from the Kyrgyz State Border Service that lets foreign travellers enter restricted border zones near China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. It is not a visa, and you must carry the original with your passport.

Which areas require a border permit?

The 5-zone permit covers the Chong-Kemin valley (Chui), Karkyra, Sary-Jaz, Enilchek, Khan Tengri and Sarychat-Ertash (Issyk-Kul), Ak-Sai valley, Kel-Suu, Kok-Kiya, Chatyr-Kul and Torugart (Naryn), the Trans-Alay range and Lenin Peak (Osh), and the Kadamjay district (Batken).

Should I take the 5-zone or the 1-zone permit?

The 5-zone permit is the most recommended, because it covers every restricted area and lets you plan and change your itinerary freely. Take the 1-zone permit only if Kel-Suu lake (Naryn zone) is the single restricted area you plan to visit. It is collected in Naryn, on the way to the lake.

    How long does it take?

The 5-zone permit takes 6 to 10 working days, the 1-zone Kel-Suu permit about 6 working days. Weekends and public holidays are not counted.

    Can I track my application?

Yes. If you ordered through OunTravela, enter your order number and email in the tracker above to see your current status.
